Elvira was born on March 5, 1949 in Weslaco, Texas to Manuel and Elvira Briones.  She graduated from Plymouth High School in Indiana and studied at Ancilla College.

Elvira enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1970 and served honorably.  She then returned to Plymouth and started her career in Medical Administration at Parkview Hospital. Over the years she rose in rank and would hold several management positions specializing in medical billing.  She retired from Community Health Network in Indianapolis in 2011.

She was a loving wife to Vern Knepper and Ronald Bumpas whom both preceded her in death.

Elvira loved her family. She also really enjoyed cooking and entertaining for her friends with great passion.  Elvira was a loving sister to her six siblings, Belia, Elia, Ofelia, Guillermo, Manuel, and Jose’. She loved getting together with them and friends for cookouts and game nights.

Elvira also loved being a mother and grandmother. The special bond between her and her son, Dion Hughes was very clear to all that knew her.  She was a wonderful and supportive grandmother to her grandchildren, Donielle and DJ, as well as her step-grandchildren, Ambrya and Daquan.  They spent countless hours together in the library, at parks, and at the pool where she taught them all how to swim.  Elvira was a very strong woman, even as her health declined she found the strength to attend basketball games to support her grandson and travel to Virginia to attend her granddaughter’s graduation.

Elvira Bumpas passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021 at the age of seventy-two years old. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Guillermo Briones and sister, Elia Briones.

She is served by her son, Dion Hughes (Didi); her grandchildren Donielle Hughes, Dionte’ “DJ” Hughes, and Ambrya Morris; great-grandchildren; brothers, Manuel Briones and Jose’ Briones; sisters, Belia Hetfield and Ofelia Whitcomb (Michael) and a host of  nieces and nephews.

Elvira lived her life on her own terms and gave so much of herself to loved ones.  She will be deeply missed.

Elvira was a great person. We graduated together, with the "Class of 1967". Dion, Joan Hunt is my cousin, and she told me what a wonderful young man, you have become. Your Mom was a sweetheart.
Hugs and prayers,
Ren and Beverly Van Gilder
