James Evert Williams (Tack) was born January 19, 1940 in Selma, Alabama. He was the son of the late Claudia Burke and Willie Williams.

He graduated from Saginaw High School. He later relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana with his family. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

He received the nickname Tack as a very young boy because of how well he dressed.  People would say he looked sharp as a tack! Tack helped run a program that helped youths: Tack mentored, transported to games and other events, provided Christmas gifts and food to all who participated in the All Saints program. He coached his son’s basketball team. Tack retired from Marathon Oil Refinery (formerly Rock Island in 1994) after 25 years of employment there. Tack loved to play basketball and watch movies. Tack had a way of breaking down, dissecting, and explaining movies so that you would have a better understanding of them. Tack stood 6ft 5 inches.  Tack was hands down one of the best storytellers that ever lived!  Tack loved his family and was liked and respected by all.

Tack was preceded in death by his mother, Claudia Burke; father, Willie Williams; grandfather, Raymond Hale; grandmother Alice Hale (Dear); his youngest daughter, Angela Williams; grandsons, Jerimiah Williams and Josiah Williams, another grandson, Mack Anthony Williams, and  a nephew, Reginald Burke.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory his oldest daughter, Cherie Williams and her mother, Beverly Brown; son, Michael Williams  (Kristi) and his mother, Ruth Williams; grandchildren Katrina Rutland, James Bills Jr., Sierra Williams, Joseph Williams, Anthony Williams, Jasmine Williams, Beverly Williams, Adrienne Williams, Karla Williams, Alysia Griffin, Devon Taylor, and Jayden Williams; great-grandchildren Jayla Bills, Storme Torrence, James Bills Jr., DawnTrinae’ Rutland, Day’Shawn Bills, Jaaliyah Bills, Alayah Williams, Maliah Hearns, Malik Hearns, Maiyah Hearns, and Amari Williams; aunt, Arnita Hatcher; brother, John Burke (Lorna); nephews, Matthew Burke and Brandon Burke; and a host of other family, friends, and loved ones.

To the Williams Family: So, So wished I could have been there today. My prayers are with you. May God continue to Bless and keep each and every one of you. Anyone that ever met or came into contact with Tack could not forget him. Why? Because he never was anyone but "himself!" Kind, welcoming, and full of hospitality. The memories we have will be etched in our hearts forever. Treasure and cherish them!
