Eugene Boyd, Jr. was born on June 13th, 1944 to Martha L Spearman and Eugene Boyd Sr.  He attended Holy Angels Catholic School and Cathedral High School where he graduated in 1962. Eugene served in the United States Marine Corps from 1963-1967 with one active tour in Vietnam.

In 1966, he married Carolyn Mack. That union produced one son, Eugene Boyd III.  He was also later married to Yvonne Rhodes, where he was Stepdad to Debra, Denise, Frank, Jr., and Daphne.  He graciously accepted the role of Father Figure to Maria Badger and Jennifer Lewis.

In 1969 he was accepted into the 46th class as a recruit for Indianapolis Police Department. He served and protected the streets of Indianapolis for 38 years. He was one of the first African Americans to serve as a member of the SWAT team. He also acted as “Officer Friendly” where he visited numerous schools in the Indianapolis area. He retired as a Sergeant in 2007.

While he did accept Christ at an early age as a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, he later in life was immersed in Christian Baptism in 1998 by his son, Gene Boyd, III, where he became a member of Traders Point Christian Church.

Upon retiring he enjoyed lunch with friends, watching The Young and Restless and sports, volunteering to serve communion to homebound church members and spending time with his beloved Romeo.

Eugene is survived by his children, Eugene (Jodi) Boyd III, Jermaine (Ashlee) Waddell, Amanda Ward and Ian (Reva) Mackey; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Kamryn and Caleb Boyd, Shamaine and Jayme Waddell, Rayshawn Brent, Jada Joi Petty, Krista and Ashlynn Woodson, and Brooklyn Mackey; his siblings, Keith (Lillian) Boyd and sister Carol Lynn Boyd. His longtime partner, soulmate and best friend of 25 years, Carmena Mackey. A very special friend and brother in blue, Brian Keith Dixon, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and brothers in blue.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha and Eugene Boyd, his sisters Chris Ann and Patsy, and his brothers Raymond, Dave and Steve. He was known to many as “Big Boy” and others affectionately as Dad, Pacelli, Pops, PawPaw, Papa Gene and simply, Gene.

Eugene was a lifetime servant. A servant of his country in the Marine Corps, a beloved servant to his community through IPD, a servant to his family and of the Lord. He was a survivor of war, years on the street as a cop, multiple myeloma and prostate cancer.  He was a WARRIOR. An ultimate fan of Gene through Cathedral wrestling and Indiana University football and life. He was an incredibly proud man, the life of the party and great encourager to many, even to his last breath. It didn’t require blood for him to consider you family and he loved fiercely. We honor him for all he’s given so freely.

I'm thinking of a number of special memories enjoyed in the company of Eugene Boyd Jr., USMC, Sgt/IPD | IMPD (Ret). Of my dearest of brothers who I pray is now enjoying "Eternal Rest" after his departure from this life. "Oorah" for being "ever faithful" and my close friend!

I worked with Gene for years and you couldn't have had a better supervisor because he cared about everyone.
He's one of those at IMPD you always remember.

Carmena and & Family and Eugene Boyd, Jr., please know that sincere prayers and sympathy are extended to you at this difficult time. Gene was a very kind and considerate man and your many memories will certainly sustain and keep you in the days, weeks, months and years to come. My memory of Gene as an officer with IMPD who regularly provided security during my "skate" days was a fond one. Also, Gene's family attended Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church and we celebrated many homegoing celebrations with you all. Praying for you all and wishing God's blessings upon you.

My deepest sympathies to the family. Sgt Eugene Boyd was the best supervisor an officer could ask for. He truly cared for his men and it was an honor to work for him.
