Doris Katherine Smith was born on February 1, 1926 in Kodak, Kentucky to Melvin Riley and Nettie Fugate Riley. Doris was from a large family with 14 children.

In January 1942 Doris was united in Holy Matrimony to William D. Yeary. To this union five children were born; Tina, Helen, Henry Van, Stella and William Jr. William Jr. had complications at birth and left this earth at the tender age of three months. Doris kept his hair brush and blue blanket for the majority of her life until they were unfortunately lost during a move.

Doris remained married to William Yeary Sr. until his demise on February 12, 1965. On December 24, 1970 she married William Smith and remained his wife until his death in August 2001.

Doris became a born again Christian at a young age. She loved listening to gospel music and read from her Bible every morning. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 27:1.

As a young adult Doris formed a covenant partnership with Irvington First Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Robert H. Noel. There she remained a faithful servant of the Lord for over 50 years until her age progressed.

Doris moved to Indianapolis in 1955 and later became a Nursing Assistant at Community Hospital East. She worked there in various departments for about 38 years until she retired. She enjoyed working in the nursery taking care of the newborns and spoke about them often. She remained friends with a number of her co-workers throughout her lifetime.

Doris was an avid gardener and grew the best tomatoes. She created many beautiful ceramics and exercised until she was well into her eighties. She also liked to decorate and was a very good cook and baker. She was an immaculate housekeeper and her home was always clean and neat. For many years Doris would rise early in the morning to go fishing. Her fishing buddy was her daughter Helen’s father-in-law, Joseph Bebley.

Doris went to be with the Lord at the age of 94 years, 6 months and 12 days. Doris was preceded in death by her daughter, Helen Bebley; son, William Yeary Jr.; grandson, Joseph A. Bebley; seven brothers and  sisters, George Riley, Joe Riley, Grant Riley, Ethel Kimbro, Clydean Fugate, Marjorie Coles, and Ruby Parkey.

Those left to cherish her memory are her three children; Elder Tina Ford (Hollis), and Stella Carter, both of Indianapolis, Indiana and Henry Van Yeary of Sacramento, California; grandchildren, Romero Rasdell, Theresa Whittington, Tonya Haines (Jesse), Rev. Antonio Alexander (Min. Victoria Alexander), Johnny Carter, Jr. (Crystal Snider), Henry Van Yeary Jr. (Kim), Juan Bebley (Nicole), Raymone Bebley (Verla), Angel Clark (Alvin), Lindsey Ford, and Jonathan Ford (Rachel). Doris also had many great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Doris also leaves behind to cherish her memory six brothers and sisters; Charity Collins, Chester Riley (Ann), Milton Riley (Revonda), and Kenneth Riley, all of Morristown, Tennessee, Mildred Yeary of Pottstown, Pennsylvania and Isabelle McBride of Baltimore, Maryland.
