Mr. James Virgil Byers affectionately known as “PawPaw” passed away peacefully at age 95 on Monday, August 24, 2020.  He was born in Trenton, Kentucky on September 18, 1924.

He was a faithful member of Coppin Chapel A.M.E. Church for over fifty years.  He was a trustee of Coppin Chapel A.M.E. Church, member of Sons of Allen, Indiana Conference, Men’s Lay Chorus, Indiana Conference Lay Organization, 4th District A.M.E. Church Lay Organization, 32nd Street Men’s Club, and Prince Hall Masonic Lodge.

With much resilience, strength and dedication he started Byers Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning and he later became the first black Master Plumbers in Indianapolis, Indiana.  He was a dedicated teacher of Building Trades at Arsenal Technical High School. His students were the first to build homes for Habitat for Humanity in the city of Indianapolis, Indiana.  He retired from Bridgeport Brass after 30 years of service.  He was a father figure and mentor to many young men who crossed his path.

James Virgil Byers was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Susie Catherine Bradshaw-Byers; parents, John and Addie Byers; brothers, John Douglas, Marshall, Barker; and sisters, Frankie Bell, Bertha Morehead, Ruth Kirby, and Dorothy Morris.

PawPaw” leaves to cherish is memories his children, Catherine Woodard, Linda Byers and James E. Byers (Bunkie); the proud grandfather to Adrienne Wharton (Mychal), Nichelle Turentine and Justin Byers; great-grandfather to, Jordan, Jayda, Janca, Mychal-Nichelle, Zion, and Jameson, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, church family and friends.
