Ermal Adelia Miller Franklin Vinnegar was the fifth child born to Walter Gill and Beady Orinda Pettiford Miller, she was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 30, 1924 and departed this life on Sunday August 23, 2020.
Ermal was a proud graduate of Crispus Attucks High School and graduated in the class of 1943. In 1945 Ermal married Sylvester Thomas Franklin to this union was born one son, Darryl Sylvester Franklin. In 1965 Ermal married Aaron Vinnegar and they remained married until his passing in 2003. Ermal worked at Radio Corporation of America (RCA) until her retirement in 1986 She was a modern women for her day. She was a working mother and worked at RCA for years and was one of the few African American women that was a supervisor on an Assembly line.
She was the youngest girl in her family, after the unfortunate death of the infant twins, Henry and Helen, she remained the youngest child until the birth of her brother Herbert Cleo Miller. She was known as the glamorous movie star looking aunt. She was the aunt who made red velvet cake and fried pies for the reunion and everyone knew if you didn’t move fast to get a slice of red velvet cake or a fried pie you would miss out. She was also a breast cancer survivor.
There are many Aunt Ermal stories that can be told by her nieces, and nephews, and Grandma Ermal stories told by her grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren for years to come . She loved to share stories about her life on the southside of Indianapolis and the great life she had growing up with her sisters and brothers. She now joins some of them in the great beyond. Walter Maurice, Ervenia Estell, Miriam Orinda, Henry and Helen, and Joseph Adrian are all waiting to welcome her to eternal rest and peace.
Ermal is survived by her son, Darryl Sylvester Franklin; brother, Dr. Herbert Cleo Miller; grandchildren, Elliot K. and Darryl Sylvester Franklin, Jr., Jericho Franklin, Nia Franklin, and Jordan Franklin; Keyana, Trey, Deja, Darryl, III, Michael, Madison, Noah, Alexander, Jr., and Cody; one great-great-grandchild and a host of nieces and nephews and cousins that will cherish her memory.
