Obituary

Mona was born in Prospect, Tennessee on May 6, 1939 to Berlin Nelson and Easter V. Jenkins. She later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where she attended School #26 and graduated from Arsenal Technical H.S.

Mona left Indianapolis in the early 60’s for the windy city of Chicago, Illinois. Mona worked as a window dresser and at Mercy Hospital.

Upon returning to Indy in the early 90’s to help take care of her mom, she later joined North United Methodist Church, and worked for Warren township schools.

Mona the matriarch. Mona loved bowling, dressing, socializing and most importantly, she loved to live life. She always said to take life one day at a time. She wanted to enjoy every minute of life  fearlessly and joyfully. She lived life without regrets and poured her  wisdom back into legacy.

Mona was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michelle Nelson and her brother, Erwin “Brother” Nelson.

She is survived by her daughter, Margo Nelson McDonald  (Edward); granddaughter, Monique Nelson; great-grandchildren, Raymond Waites, Jr., Nazire Parks, and Alandrea Parks; great-great grandson, Ryan Waites of Houston, Texas; one and only sister, Martha “Cookie” Leavelle; two brothers, Kelvin Beaty, Sr. (Melissa) and Samuel Beaty, Jr.; nieces, Angie Nelson, Marlene, Victoria, Kayla, and Shaniece Beaty; nephews, William Leavell and Kelvin Beaty, Jr.; great nieces, Charlie, Zhara, and Alexis; and plenty of cousins, other relatives and very close friends.

Her Infamous Quotes:

Oh Man! She’s short and sweet leather with pleats Overalls and Furs, Jazzy and very observed, “It’s not what you do it’s how you do it”, is what you taught us Ms. Magic.

Love you, Monique Nelson
