Mary Bryant Tandy was born on January 13, 1922 in Humphrey County, Mississippi to Thomas and Florence Coleman. She was one of five children, three brothers (Richard, Thomas and James) one sister (Cellestine) who all preceded her in death. Her sister-in-law, Pearl McCallum Coleman is the last remaining matriarch of the family.

Mary began her Christian journey when she accepted Christ at Love Feast M.B. Church in Louise, Mississippi. She was united in marriage to Eddie Bryant in Yazoo, Mississippi in 1940.  They relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana to pursue better opportunities. They joined Good Samaritan Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. J. T. Highbaugh Sr.  To this union they were blessed with six children, two sons and four daughters. Eddie preceded her in death.

Mary had a quiet, sweet demeanor and strong aspirations to serve in her community: Household of Ruth Chapter 5018 and Marion County Democratic Women’s Club.  She was a precinct committee woman for several years on the Eastside.  Mary attended Indiana University and Ivy Tech College pursuing news media courses.

In 1970, Ms. Tandy joined the staff at the Indiana Herald newspaper.  The Indiana Herald served the Indianapolis and surrounding counties for more than 50 years.

In 1983, she united in marriage to O. L. Tandy, owner and publisher who preceded her in death.  She became one of few African American female owners; and published for over 30 years.  Mary Tandy was dedicated to the vision of making the newspaper a viable channel of informative news. Due to her declining health the paper ceased publication in 2016.

Ms. Tandy’s professional affiliations consisted of, Indiana Democratic Editorial Association, the National Newspapers Publishers Association, United Way award and Mayor’s “Partner 2000”.  She was recognized through numerous honors and awards: Doctor of Humane Letters from Martin University;  the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest honor bestowed upon a lay person by the Governor of the State of Indiana; the Pathfinder Award from the NAACP, as well as the Trailblazer award from the Indiana Black Expo.

On Friday, June 5, 2020, Dr. Mary Bryant Tandy, quietly transitioned to her heavenly home at the age of 98 blessed years. One son preceded her in death, Andrew Lee Bryant.  She leaves to cherish her memory, one son, Leroy Bryant, and four daughters, Bernice Matheson, Betty Bryant, Mary Murff and Alice (Wilbur) Jackson; 16 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, 36 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, which includes the Chicago, Mississippi and St. Louis families.

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Revelation 21:4
