A Brief Sketch of Life

Mrs. Mattie Edmonds was born Mattie Lorene Harris on February 2, 1944 in Charlotte, Tennessee to the late Pauline Harris Eldridge. She was the younger sister of William Ordell Harris who preceded her in death.

Mattie spent her preteen years living in Charlotte, Tennessee with her extended family and grandparents the late Porter and Rachel Harris on their farm. Mattie always spoke of the fond memories she shared with her brother, cousins and grandparents.  Mattie later moved to Indianapolis and attended and graduated from Harold E. Wood High School.

In 1977, Mattie was wed in holy matrimony on a wintry New Year’s Eve to George Edmonds Sr. and they were married for 31 years until his death.

Preceding her marriage, Mattie began her work career in Indianapolis with RCA and from there moved on to spend over 30 years working for Riley Children’s Hospital and Clarian Health. This was a job she truly enjoyed and loved working at. Mattie was a bright light and fun free spirit that her coworkers adored. Mattie enjoyed the opportunity to bond with some of the children, the parents and staff. Mattie had an amazing gift of being able to talk about anything to anyone. Mattie was a consummate conversationalist.

Mattie retired from Clarian Health in 2010 and it was an exciting time for her. Mattie spent her retirement traveling within and outside the country, enjoying the arts, meeting with friends and being with her family.  Her most memorable places to visit were Mexico, the Dominican Republic and of course her favorite Las Vegas. Mattie loved the lights, the musical shows and the casinos. It was her yearly journeys to Vegas that brought a smile to her face and joy to her heart.

Mrs. Mattie Lorene Edmonds departed this earthly life and walked through heaven’s doors on May 27, 2020 at the age of seventy-six years old.

Mattie leaves behind to cherish her memories, three sons, Darrell Beemon, Denard (Monica) Beemon, George (Linda) Edmonds, and two daughters, Deneen Beemon and Tiffany Griffin, a niece Francine (John Hal) Malone III, nephew William Bryant Harris, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a host of cousins and other relatives and family and friends.
