Michael Wilkes was born on November 22, 1939 to Henry and Grace Wilkes in Indianapolis, Indiana. He passed away on May 4, 2020, in his home with family.

Michael was raised in a loving Christian home with his parents and older brother, Henry. Growing up he was very active and ambitious. At a young age, he learned the value of family togetherness, friendship, hard work, and a strong relationship with God.  He maintained those values throughout his entire life and stay committed to his beliefs.

Michael graduated from Crispus Attucks High School 1957.  This is where he met Mary Alice Crenshaw, his future wife of almost 60 years. Michael and Mary were joined in Holy matrimony on July 2, 1960.  Together, they had four children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Michael and Mary virtually shared a lifetime of love, happiness, prosperity, and joy together with their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family, friends, and many  acquaintances along the way.

Michael was often called “Big Mike” by his friends and family, and although he stood only 5’7’’ and barely weighed 150 lbs., his personality and joyful presence earned him every bit of that nickname.  Michael was a long-time barber, a trade he learned from his father. He owned and operated Mikes Barbershop on Indiana Avenue where he met a host of friends and earned the reputation of an honest, hardworking man. He very rarely had one source of income, and stay committed to providing for his family. While operating the barbershop, Mike usually worked a part time job, sometimes even a second full time job, to ensure he provided for his family.

In 1965 Michael began his career working for the U.S. Postal Service. He held several positions while working there, including mail handler, security supervisor, and branch manager. He retired from the Postal Service in 1995.

Michael was a true believer in Jesus Christ and often read bible verses and formed a strong personal relationship with God. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #33. He enjoyed bowling, softball, golf, motorcycle riding, and spending time with family and friends. He always looked forward to Sundays when he could sit with his wife, children, and grandchildren reminiscing and talking about every topic imaginable. He stayed in tune with current events and loved to read the daily newspaper. All who knew Big Mike, understood how intelligent and engaging he was, he loved to converse and was always available when you needed him.

Michael is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Henry Wilkes. He leaves to cherish his loving memory, his wife, Mary Alice Wilkes; his children; Michael W. Wilkes Jr., Gregory A. Wilkes, Dennis W. Wilkes (Yvonne), and Michele Blackwell (James); his grandchildren, Isaiah Wilkes, Joshua, Elijah Wilkes,  Kristafer Wilkes, and Marckus Williams; great-grandchildren, Laila Wilkes, Israel Wilkes, and Legend Wilkes; a host of  nieces and nephews, close friends and family members.
