JAMES HOWARD HUGHES, son of Broy Hughes and  Ligon Smith Hughes, was born June 27, 1934, in Forest, Mississippi. He completed his education at E. T. Hawkins High School in Forest.

 

On October 28, 1954, JAMES was joined in Holy Matrimony to Charleane R. Richmond.  Together they moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1955. Their life of marital contentment spanned over sixty-five years and their union was blessed with three sons and a daughter.

 

Having been reared in a Christian home, JAMES’s early church membership was in  Mississippi.  His most recent church membership was at Twenty-fifth Street Baptist Church under the pastorage of Rev. E. James Odom.

 

Industrious and hard-working in nature, JAMES provided well for his wife and family.  He was employed by the CSX Railroad for forty years and eight months.  It was during this time, in 1972, he was recognized as an Indiana  Hero.  On June 30,  1971, he saved the lives of two women by pushing their car off the railroad track, just a few minutes before the fast-coming train approached.  He later was employed by The Indianapolis Star and The Indianapolis News for   twenty-seven years.

 

JAMES HUGHES was both well-liked and respected by many, he was a member of the Southern Cross Masonic Lodge #39 and Constantine Consistory #25.  He was a 32nd degree Mason. 

 

Dearly devoted to his wife and family, JAMES loved to talk and he was a brilliant conversationalist.  He never met a stranger, and to his many friends, he was known as “JIMMY” or “MR. HUGHES” .

 

JAMES HOWARD HUGHES departed this earthly life on Monday, March 23, 2020, at the age of eighty-five years eight months and twenty-eight days.  He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Howard Hughes, and siblings, two brothers, John Arthur Hughes and Calvin Hughes, and sisters, Allie Mae Monroe and Mary Louise Ragland.

 

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Charleane R. Hughes; sons, Dewain Hughes and Michael Hughes, and daughter, Charlotte (Gregory)Twyman; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers, George (Evelyn) Hughes and McMurphy (Sue) Hughes; sister, Dorothy (George) Welch, three generations of nieces and nephews, other relatives, family and friends.

To my uncle James, you’ll definitely be missed by me and my extended family I know you’ve had a tough road now you’re at peace. I remember you very well as a little girl growing up. Thank you for being a wonderful brother to my dad our condolences to my aunts and all my cousins and relatives love you uncle James rest in peace from the Hughes Rodgers family
