A man who had a natural talent and personality to make friends and entertain no matter the situation. A man
who loved cars and always had the latest whip. A man of many words and stories that always had a life lesson at the end. A man who loved movies – his favorites were SuperFly, The Mack and Big Mommas House. You may know him as "Big J", but we know him as John D. Johnson, the most devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.
John D. Johnson Jr., 57 of Indianapolis, was born to John D. Johnson Sr. and Zenophia F. Beasley on February 12, 1963. He entered Holy Matrimony with Miss Irish Yvonne Gadis, his high school sweetheart, on February 14, 1988. They shared 32 years of marital bliss and to that union came three handsome, wonderful boys.
Upon graduation from Arsenal Technical High School, John obtained a Data Processing certificate from Clark College. He then went on to be an employee at Methodist Hospital. Having an entrepreneurial mindset, John joined his late brother’s business and became the Vice President of Greene Thumb Landscape Inc.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Johnson Sr.; his mother, Zenophia Beasley; his brothers, Ronald Davenport, Clarence Brooks, Sidney Johnson; his sister, Joyce Beasley, Tujuana Millers, Sofie Stevens; his niece, Tiasha Johnson.
Leaving to cherish his memory is his beautiful, loyal and tolerant wife, Mrs. Irish Yvonne Johnson; sons, John III (Chelsea), Brenten (Michelle), Joshua, Mekhi; daughters, LaQuetta (Dennis), Jasmine; grandchildren, Dynasty, Dennis, John IV, Deniyah, Joshua Jr., Zane, Brennan, Brenten Jr., Zerek, MarLayiah, Misa, Jaden, Zoei, Londyn; brother, James; sister, Rhonda; sister-in-law, Betty Davenport; brother-in-law, Ezell (Aletha) Gadis, Steve Gadis; nephews, Michael, Michael Jr., Sidney, Pierre; nieces, Kirsten (Darius), Kia, Shontelle, Meka, Dontá, Marjorie, Pat; godson, Antwan Avant and a host of other family members and friends.
John was truly a great man whose impact will forever be felt not only by his family, but the entire Indianapolis community. His ability to love, sacrifice and provide for his family will forever be a lesson to all he knew. His mantra was, “You can’t control when you leave here, but you can control what you do while you’re here.” He controlled what he did on this Earth and became a pillar in the Indianapolis community until he was called home on March 7, 2020.
