Life’s Reflection

Samuel L. Davis was born March 30, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois to Betty and Samuel Davis.  Sam grew up on a farm in Ethel, Mississippi with his grandparents, Nellie and David HughesSam moved to Indianapolis, Indiana during his early adult years.

Sam was employed with the Indianapolis Public School System for over thirty years as a Custodial Supervisor. Sam seldom missed a day at work. He developed his hard working attitude from working on the farm.  He never met a stranger.  His smile and laugh was infectious. Sam  was respectfully referred to as Mr. Davis by students, faculty and staff.

Sam developed a special relationship with the students, faculty and staff.  He was always willing to help where and when needed.  He would often purchase needed items for the students such as shoes, clothing, coats and school supplies. Sam would sponsor pizza parties for the students always encouraging them to be the best they could be.  He proudly coached the boys and girls basketball teams and baseball teams. He made sure they had the necessary equipment even if he had to purchase it himself. He purchased equipment for the track and field team. His kindness and generosity was immeasurable. He would teach some of the special needs students with life skills such as using yard equipment.  He would help them with their reading and math.

Samuel L. Davis departed this earthly life November 9, 2019.  He will be missed by all who knew him. Loved ones who preceded  Sam in death include his parents, and a brother, Lawrence Davis.

Sam will be remembered by Phlica Ford, who he embraced as a daughter and she so lovingly cared for him; his daughter, Kerlinda Mayfield, of Wendell, North Carolina; adopted son, Cory Mayfield, of Raleigh, North  Carolina; granddaughter, Parriss Jones; sister, Barbara McGee, of Jackson, Mississippi; uncle, Ernest Davis,  nephews and nieces, many cousins and a host of friends.

What you leave behind is not what is engraved

But what is woven into the lives of others.
