We rejoice the life of Marilyn Shirley (Morton) Corbitt, 80, Indianapolis, who passed away peacefully on September 29, 2019, as a result of complications from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Born in Louisville, KY, in 1939, Marilyn moved to the Butler-Tarkington area of  Indianapolis, graduating from Shortridge High School. After attending Butler University and joining the sorority of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., marrying a veterinary student, and managing the office of his veterinary hospitals, she joined the staff of North Central High School as a college and student life counselor. Her work at North Central proved to be her calling as she was thoroughly fulfilled and rewarded by opportunities to guide students as they commence life’s journey. Marilyn always maintained connections with her students; whether praising or conveying her confidence, it was not rare to see tears falling both ways when reunited with her “kids.”

Marilyn was a devout Christian, well deserving of His grace, and served His will through deeds.

Never in her life did Marilyn meet a stranger. She was many things to many  people, and lived a life defined by her generosity to others. Her zest for easing the burdens of those in her life was only outweighed by her instinctive ability to find the good in others and tireless commitment to help them find it too. She greeted you with a hug and a sincere compliment that would brighten your day. With a sharp wit and an infectious personality, she was a second mother to many through their best times and their most challenging times.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Dr. Earl Corbitt, veterinarian; father, Moreland Morton; mother, Juanita Singleton; and son,   Corey Corbitt. She was a patient mother to her surviving children, Ronald    Corbitt, Sr, Cathy Jones, Henry (Cathy) Corbitt and David (Kristin) Corbitt. She was blessed with 8 grandchildren, Ronald Corbitt, Kyle Corbitt, Ashley Scurlock, Bryce Jones, Caden Corbitt, Camille Corbitt, Greysen Corbitt and Bella Corbitt.  Marilyn will be deeply missed by her devoted and loving children and grandchildren, her aunt, Bebe Courtney, cousins Michelle Moorman and Larry Courtney, Jr., many sisters/brothers-in law, nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Thus us the first of several I will probably write throughout the week. They will be in no particular order. I write them from memory and hope each of them will put a smile in your hearts.
We were in the guidance conference room attempting to see who would graduate. Mrs Corbitt was asked to pull records for the children we were considering. It was taking her 5-10 minutes for each child. The clock was ticking. Finally I went to her and said “Marily, what is the problem? We are trying to find more students to graduate. We are checking the criteria. She said OMG! I thought you were SUBTRACTING students from the graduation list because they didn’t meet the criteria. She ran from that mo on to secure those files. Several students were added bec they qualified for the waiver, thanks to her help, we were able to get the job completed. Thanks to all of you for sharing your mother with us. Sylvia Lane
