Leroy Spells was born to the late Jessie Spells, Sr. and Lillie Mae Reed Spells, on July 13, 1940, in Shubuta, Mississippi.

Early in life he joined Tribulation Baptist Church of Shubuta, Mississippi. He attended Shubata Elementary School and Shirley Owen High School of the Clarke County School System in the state of Mississippi.

During his late teen years Leroy moved to Indianapolis, Indiana.  He lived with his older siblings, continued his education and worked various jobs.

In 1986, Leroy joined Grace Missionary Baptist Church under of the late Pastor Moses Day, Jr. It was his joy to work on the Usher Board and sing with the Male Chorus. Leroy was also ordained as an Deacon and was Chairman of the Deacon Board for many years until his health began to fail. Leroy loved his church family and worked faithfully doing many things with Pastor    Moses Day, Jr. for the good of the church.

Leroy married Monerleasser Heidelberg in November of 1987.  Together they traveled many places, and when his health failed, Lisa kept him in their home so he would be comfortable.   He was never too ill to say to his caregivers, “Thank you”, and “You are a good man” .  He would say many thing to make you laugh, so hard. We will always love miss him.

Leroy was employed thirty-two years at U. S Airways Airline and retired in August of 1997. Leroy was a very happy person and was always smiling. He was a sharing man. He loved to fish and hunt, and always had a story to tell about fishing, hunting, and the people on his job. He also loved to grill and cook.

 Leroy answered God’s calling on May 11, 2019, at the age of seventy-eight year and ten months, at Evergreen Crossing while there for a respite stay.

Leroy was the youngest of his sisters and brothers, and was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Jessie Spells Jr., Handy Spells, Chester Spells, and Lester Spells, and two sisters, Lois Spells Mahone, and Elsie Foster.

Leroy Spells leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 31 years, Monerleasser Spells, of Indianapolis, Indiana; daughter, Charay Spells, and son, Leroy Spells, both of Indianapolis, Indiana; four granddaughters, ReKnese and KeRece Taylor, and  Jordynn and Niya Spells; three grandsons, Chris, Cameron, and Darshae Spells; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Lurille Turlney, of Indianapolis, Indiana; seven sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his Grace Missionary Baptist Church Family.
