James Carlus Mitchell, Sr. was born in Sparta, Tennessee to the late Beecher Mitchell and Vestie Worthington Mitchell on August 28, 1929.  James was one of eight children born to the union of his parents.

James received his early childhood education in Sparta.   After graduating, James enlisted in the United States Army.  He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in March of 1957.

James was united in Holy Matrimony to Theresa Mary Joefrau in 1954.  To this union was born three children, James C. Jr., Gregory A. and Maryann. 

James was baptized in the rites of the Roman Catholic Church  on  January 30, 1956 and united with St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church where he served for over twenty five years.  He later joined Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church where he currently served.

A farmer at heart, James owned livestock in Plainfield, Indiana from 1986 until 1991. Also known as a master gardener, he often sold vegetables locally. He was an avid walker.

In 1986, he retired  from the United States Postal Service as a mail handler after 35 years of service.

He was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers, Alberta Crenshaw, Lorene Mathis, Franceola Thompson, Mildred McKinley, Ray Mitchell, Joe Mitchell and Earnest Mitchell.

James departed this life on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the age of eighty nine years .  He leaves to cherish his memory his children, James C. Mitchell, Jr. (Elizabeth),  Gregory A. Mitchell (Carolyn) and Maryann Mitchell-Walker (Michael), five grandchildren and four great grandchildren, sister- in-law, Harriette C. Brown, he is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Jim was a great neighbor, kind and considerate. He will be missed in the neighborhood. !My family, children, grandchildren and myself thought a lot of him. I am so sorry I cannot be there to say goodbye to a good friend.
