Catherine Starling Johnson– Dowdy, affectionately known as “Cat”, was born April 3, 1940, in Clarksville, Tennessee. Catherine was the youngest of three daughters born to Verlasco (VC) and Martha Johnson.

Catherine attended Indianapolis Public School #26 and Crispus Attucks High School. She was employed by Rexnord  Corporation (Link-Belt) for thirty-five years, until her retirement in 1989. 

Catherine accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in Jesus’ Name at Faith Apostolic Church under the leadership of Elder Walter Plummer. She later moved her membership to Christ Church Apostolic, under the leadership of the late  Bishop James E. Tyson.

Catherine met and later married the love of her life,     Sammy O. Dowdy, on March 11, 1957. To that union was born two sons, Kevin and Samuel, Jr.

Catherine was a beloved mother and an exceptional  grandmother. She adored spending time with her great-grand   children and was an avid shopper. Catherine was a member of the Mother’s Board and Oxford Home Owners Association.

With her loving and devoted family by her side, Catherine Starling Johnson– Dowdy departed this life on    Monday, November 6, 2017, at 12:02 a.m. She was seventy-seven years,  seven months and four days of age.

Catherine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sammy Dowdy; parents, Verlasco and Martha Johnson; step-mother, Ann Johnson and sister, Marion Merriweather.

Catherine Starling Johnson– Dowdy leaves to cherish her memory sons, Kevin (Teresa) and Samuel (Tonia) Dowdy; sister, Barbara Whitehead-Bowers;  brothers, Bishop Sherman (Vera) and Harold (Tommie) Merritt; two grandchildren. Shameka Dowdy and Kevin Dowdy, Jr.; seven great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family and friends..

To the Family and Catherine, a beloved and favorite cousin, may God give you strength and peace in knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
