Mrs. Vernon Lamore Thompson Winters was born July 19, 1943, to the Elijah and Rosetta Whitfield in Giles County, Tennessee. Vernon and her family relocated to Indianapolis when she was a child. Vernon accepted Christ at an early age and later united with Progressive Baptist Church where she continued to worship.

Vernon excelled scholastically and graduated from Broad   Ripple High School, Ivy Tech and Indiana University-Purdue        University at Indianapolis (IUPUI), where she earned a Bachelors in      Nursing degree.  She was employed at Methodist, St. Vincent and William N. Wishard hospitals.  She also worked diligently at   Springfield Healthcare Center where she served for over thirty years. Even after retirement, she continued to work as a Registered Nurse on a part-time basis at Hooverwood Healthcare Center.

Vernon loved reading, especially while sitting in the sun.  Her other past times and hobbies included sewing, knitting and     crocheting, (especially clothing for her daughter’s dolls), and    spending quality time with her family.  Another passion of hers was constructing and furnishing a miniature doll house, which she was proud to accomplish.

The true love of Vernon’s life was her family.  During her transition, Tammy, Kimberly and Tonya were privileged to be there as Vernon answered The Call of the Heavenly Father, relinquishing this world’s pain, suffering and worrying to a world of everlasting peace, unconditional love and contentment.  Knowing where she is, provides the family with comfort.  Although sad by missing her   earthly presence, they find joy in knowing that she is with The   Heavenly Father.

Mrs. Vernon Lamore Thompson Winters was   preceded in death by her parents, Elijah Whitfield and Rosetta Rives; a brother, Reedie Whitfield and sisters, Rose Rhodes and Sandra Simms.

Memories of her will be cherished by her daughters, Tammy Merriweather, Kimberly Thompson and Tonya Russell; a brother, Frank Rives, Jr.; grandchildren, Megan, Ryan and Dandrew Merriweather, Steven Young and Brittney Russell, and great granddaughter, Amelia Young, as well as nieces and nephews, and a host of family and friends.
