Mr. Hubert Lee Wheat was born in Indianapolis, Indiana,  to the late  parents of Hubert Lee Wheat, Sr. and Marrine Peacock Wheat, on November 16, 1952.  He attended the Indianapolis Public School  System and participated  in many sports such as basketball, football and baseball. He graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1970 and went on to Purdue University. He joined a small group called Haramba Iota and had his first son, Marcus Williams. He later graduated from Purdue in December of 1975.

Hubert was one of the first African American men to work as a             Manufacturing Processing Engineer at Ford Motor Company. It was at this time he met the former Donna Fleming. They married and had three children together, Hubert Lee Wheat III, Joshua G. Wheat, Sr.  and Amanda M. Wheat.

Hubert retired from Ford Motor Company, but expressed and shared his knowledge through many outlets all of the time.  In his spare time, he enjoyed    reading, watching movies and television shows.  It was his joy to lend a helping hand or listening ear to many.

Hubert  dedicated his life to Christ  as a young man in life and often visited  and worshipped at New Life Worship with his daughter and grandson. Always an individual with self-determination, Hubert continued his education later in life,  receiving his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan.

Hubert had been a part of Central Lodge #1 since 1984 and always enjoyed giving back to the community. His passion to giving back allowed him the            opportunity  to coach  baseball at Tarkington Park and basketball at Tabernacle  Presbyterian Church for many years. He was both of his sons’ first coach in every sport in which they ever played in.

Hubert  has been  a husband, a father to more than just his own children, a  brother  to  more than his siblings, an uncle and a dear friend to many.  He will be deeply missed by us all.

Hubert Lee Wheat departed this earthly life on Monday, September 25, 2017, at the age of sixty-four years, ten months and twenty-five days. He was      preceded in death by his sister, Priscilla Ann Norwood, and brother, Hiram Lewis Wheat.

Hubert leaves to cherish memory four children, Marcus D. Williams,     Hubert Lee Wheat, III, Joshua G. Wheat, Sr. (Tiyana) and Amanda M. Wheat; six grandchildren, Marcellus Williams, Jr., Joshua Wheat, Jr., Jaida Wheat, Jackson Wheat and Michael Howard, Jr.; two sisters, Florine Wheat–Hughes (Kevin) and Rose M. Wheat;  two brothers, Edward I. (Jaqueline) and Paul F. Wheat, a host of nieces and nephews, uncles and aunts and many

"Herb" was a fine engineer and a good friend and co-worker at Ford. I am saddened to hear of his passing at such a young age. It was much too soon to lose him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
