Mr. Samuel Edward Footman was born December 31, 1940 in Calhoun County, South      Carolina.  He was the third child and second son born to the union of James Harold Footman, Sr. and Thelma Ziegler Footman.

Samuel was reared in a Christian home where attending church and being active in church activities was not an option but instead a mandatory avocation.  As a member of St. Peters A.M.E. Church in Charleston, where he professed a belief in Christ and was baptized, he attended Sunday School and participated in all youth activities.  In addition, he with his brothers formed The       Footman Brothers Quartet, which became a regionally renowned gospel singing group.

Samuel  completed his primary and secondary education in the area schools, graduating from             Bond-Wilson High School in North Charleston, South Carolina.  He was a drummer in the high school band.

On May 14, 1963, Samuel  was united in marriage to Rosa Lee Laster.  Their union spanned over fifty-two years.

Samuel  and his brother, Sheldonia, enlisted in the United States Army and through God’s grace completed their tours of duty together and returned home safely.  They completed basic       training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, advanced individual training in California, airborne        training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and they were deployed to Vietnam War.   Having missed being shot down by a narrow margin, they were honorably discharged.

One by one, members of the Footman family made Indianapolis, Indiana their new home.  Samuel and Rosa Lee with their family relocated in 1966.  They joined the Indiana Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. R. M. Majors.  Over the years, Samuel  continued to sing with his brothers.

Samuel continued his civil service employment at the United States Postal Service, retiring due to disability.  Never one to sit idly, he channeled his talents and craftsmanship toward Universal       Contractors, an entrepreneurial endeavor he owned and operated from 1979-2010.  Samuel  hand crafted barbeque grills from barrels, and he bowled in several leagues.

Dearest to his heart was the abiding love and devotion to his wife and family.  Their marriage and their life of love and togetherness was a true partnership.  Their matrimonial model was one to truly be emulated.

On November 2, 2015, Samuel Edward Footman answered his Lord and Savior’s call.  He            transitioned peacefully and in the presence of his loved ones in the home he built.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Rosa Lee Laster Footman; sons, Jerome (Vanessa) Footman, Robert E. “Robi” Rivers, Kenneth and Timothy (Heidi) Footman; daughter, Pamela Kaye Footman; nine grandchildren; great granddaughter and brothers and sisters, James H. Footman, Jr., Jayne Brown-Palmer, Rev. Joseph L. (Quinn) Footman, Gene L. Footman, Sheldonia Footman, Loris (Darwin) McCallum, John L. (Bobbie) Footman, Thelma M. Franklin, Vera L. Waters, Gerald G. Footman, Cheryl L. Footman and Shedrick D. (Joyce) Footman, four generations of nieces and    nephews and a host of other relatives.
