Nellie Bentley Johnson was born on July 19, 1932, to the late Louis and Elvia Thorpe Johnson.

Nellie attended Indianapolis Public Schools and Crispus Attucks High School, graduating in 1950.

Nellie started her career in Healthcare services, working for LaRue Carter and Central State Hospitals for more than forty years.

After retiring from Central State Hospital, Nellie went on to work part-time for the Indianapolis Museum of Art for fourteen years.

Nellie was united in marriage to Gaines LeRoy Johnson, Jr. who preceded her in death. To this union two daughters were born, Joni Collins and Alana Shane.

Nellie gave her life to Christ at an early age.  She was a member of St. Paul AME Church for many years.

Nellie played the piano at church during her youth and continued to  play throughout her life.

Nellie was a die hard Indiana Pacer fan.  She was very active in several card clubs, Red Hatter’s Club, a former sister of the Nellie Strong, Chapter 59, Order of the Eastern Star, as well as a member of several social, civic clubs and organizations.

Nellie enjoyed family time with her daughters, Joni Collins (Brian), Alana Shane (Charles), grandson, Dehaven Shane; brothers and sisters, Eugene Bentley (Lula), Gertrude Gaddie, Edith Coleman and David Bentley and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

“Your gentle face and patient smile

With sadness we recall

You had a kindly word for each

And died beloved by all

The voice is mute and still the heart

That loved us well and true

Ah, bitter was the trial to part

From one so good as you.

You are not forgotten, Mother

Nor, will you ever be,

As long as life and memory last

We will remember thee

We miss you now, our hearts are sore

As time goes by we will miss you more,

Your loving smile, your gentle face

No one can fill your vacant place.”

We love you,

Joni & Bitsy

To the family of Nellie Johnson,

I worked with Nellie at the Indianapolis Museum of Art several years ago. Nellie was friendly and always had a smile on her face when she greeted me in the galleries. I was talking with one of the security officers last week when her name came up and we laughed over the fond memories we had of working with her.
My prayers are with the family during this time of sorrow.

To the family of Nellie,
I worked with Nellie years ago at Central State Hospital. We used to have lunch together everyday. Nellie was a wonderful and caring person. I will miss her smile. May the Lord be a comforter to Joni, Bitsy and the rest of the family in your time of sorrow.
