Olivia Louise Cheek Lucas, 89, Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2013.
Olivia, the older of two daughters, was born to the late Rev. Henry Yancy Cheek and Leonora Wyche Cheek in Rich Square, North Carolina on March 26, 1923.  She moved with her parents to Henderson, North Carolina, when she was about two years old.  Henderson became the site of the family home and shortly thereafter welcomed Dorothy, Olivia’s sister, to the family.
Olivia attended the public schools in Vance and Nash Counties, the school systems in which her parents were employed.  After high school, she attended Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Alma Mater of both parents, from which she received the AB degree in Elementary Education.  She then began a career in teaching, which lasted more than thirty years in Vance and Wake Counties in North Carolina, and in Detroit, Michigan.
Olivia was united in marriage to Lonzino Lucas, a native of Mississippi.  To this union were born a son and daughter, Michael Leon and Doris Elaine.
Having grown up in a home focused on religious training and Christian living, Olivia entered into Christian Fellowship at an early age through her Baptism at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Henderson.  She continued her Bible study and service in the choir there until she transferred with her husband to the Frist Baptist Church Raleigh.  The family moved to Detroit in 1970 and joined the Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, where she and her husband joined and diligently served in The Peculiar Ones, one of several church service clubs.  Olivia and her husband remained in Detroit until their health concerns dictated a move closer to the homes of their adult children and families, ultimately, Indianapolis, Indiana.
Olivia derived great pleasure from travel and got her first international exposure, while being stationed in Germany with Lonzino, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II.  Over the years, she enjoyed travels in the Mid Atlantic Region, throughout the Midwest, Arizona, Hawaii and with her daughter London, England, where her son worked in the financial market for three years.  Olivia also greatly enjoyed socializing with friends and playing numerous card games.
Olivia was pre-deceased by her husband in November 2008 and is survived by her sister, Dorothy Stephens of Washington, D.C.; her daughter and her husband, Doris Elaine Roach and Tommy Roach of Indianapolis, Indiana; her son and his wife, Michael Leon Lucas and Deirdra Donahue Lucas of Chicago, Illinois; and three grandchildren, Ivory and Isaiah Roach, and Perri Alise Lucas.  Her passing is also mourned by niece and her family and a nephews and his family.  Her family pays tribute to the constancy of her love, concern, and care for their well being and to the warmth and hospitality of her household.
