Mrs. Juanita Davis Waters was blessed to live to the ripe old age of eighty-seven. She peacefully entered eternity on Monday, October 24, 2011.
Juanitawas born on May 6, 1924, in Wheatcroft, Kentucky. She was the fourth of eight children and the oldest daughter born to Thomas Reed Davis and Mattie Blane Davis.
She left Wheatcroft, Kentucky in the early 1940’s and moved to Detroit, Michigan. She put her sewing skills to good use working in a dry cleaner. That’s where she met her future husband, Dee Waters. In the late 1940’s, they got married and later had three children, Victoria, Dee Roy, II and Wanda.
Juanitamoved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1957, where her talent with needle and thread lead her to pursue a career in tailoring. She was head tailor for Robert Hall Clothing, Hudson Men’s store and Sears Castleton Square. She retired from Sears in 1989 after thirty years of service.
In retirement,Juanita found fulfillment in numerous organizations and activities. She joined AARP (American Association For Retired Persons). She was involved for thirteen years, serving in leadership positions on both the local and national levels.
Juanita was Chapter President and served tenures as Secretary and Treasurer. She spent two terms as Minority Affairs Spokesperson. She chaired the Health and Long Term care Committee and was a delegate to the AARP National Convention.
Juanitaserved on the Leadership Council for the International Training in Communications (ITC). She was presented the Governor’s Voluntary Action Program, Community Service Award and she was an Ambassador for Indiana Senator Richard Lugar.
Juanita volunteered on the Goodwill Service Guild and she was a member of the Clowes Hall Women’s Committee. While she was a part of that committee, she was invited to visit Chapel Rock Christian Church.
After several visits, Juanita decided to make Chapel Rock her church home. She was baptized, on September 11, 1994. Juanita joined the choir and participated in the annual Christmas pageant. She also joined the Chapel Rockets, the Church’s Senior Citizens group. Members elected her Chair and she served as Tour Director, guiding the group on several trips.
Juanita’s love of travel made her a globe trotter. In her spare time, she visited twenty-seven states including Hawaii. She also traveled to the Greek islands, Aruba and the Bahamas. She vacationed abroad in Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Venezuela, New Zealand, Egypt and Israel, and was truly a world traveler.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Bellina Rose; three children, Flame Alligator “Victoria Waters”, Dee Roy Waters, II and Wanda Waters Skaggs; five grandchildren, Victor Reed, Dee Roy Waters, III, Eyenne Waters, Tori Smith and Kelly Trice; four great grandchildren, Veronica Waters, Nathan Waters, Parker Trice and Paris Trice, and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
