Eugene Jarrett Cummings Sr.

February 4, 1942 - June 4, 2021

A Tribute To His Life

Mr. Eugene Jarrett Cummings Sr. had a big heart, a tremendous gift for storytelling, and a profound joy for life that naturally drew people close to him. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Eugene lived a life centered on his commitment to family and sustained by his abiding Christian faith. The youngest child of James C. Cummings and Lertha Jarrett Cummings, Eugene was born on February 4, 1942, in Indianapolis, Indiana. As the youngest of ten children, Eugene  was quickly assigned the nickname, “Tiny,” as he was affectionately known  throughout his life.

Eugene received his primary and secondary education within the Indianapolis Public Schools system, graduating from Crispus Attucks High School, class of 1961. He later attended the Community College in Jackson, Michigan, and Jackson University. Eugene loved all things pertaining to education as he constantly read books and news articles that challenged his mind. He was analytical, inquisitive, and articulate while possessing a love for dictionaries, encyclopedias, and a good thesaurus. His daughter, Angela always laughed at how he, as well as her mother, Brenda would tell her “look it up” when she would ask what a word meant advising, that the process would strengthen her         vocabulary.

A man of great courage and conviction, Eugene was a respected Vietnam War veteran serving in the United States Air Force as an Airman and as a K-9 officer. Following his distinguished military service, he built a productive professional career that spanned decades while demonstrating a versatility of talents and skills. He made significant contributions as an executive at Cummings & Cummings Minority Job Placement Service, excelled as a counselor at Flanner House, and was a valued employee at Allison’s Transmission. But it was perhaps his role as Chief Bailiff of the State of Indiana Court of  Appeals that  ultimately gave Eugene the most satisfaction and greatest sense of purpose. Eugene remained in that position for many years before his  retirement in May of 2009.

Those who knew Eugene  well will remember him as a gifted artist, an avid fisherman, a lover of crossword puzzles, an enthusiast for playing pranks and telling jokes, and an extraordinary storyteller. At any event or gathering Eugene could be spotted among the crowd as the proud and elegant man who loved to dress and engage those around him with his intelligent wit and gift of gab.

Above all else, family and faith meant everything to Eugene. Professing a faith in Christ at an early age, Eugene first worshipped under the Catholic religion and later studied and worshiped as a Baptist. Eugene loved the Lord and he carried his faith with him throughout his rich and meaningful life.

Mr. Eugene Jarrett Cummings Sr. departed this earthly life on Friday, June 4, 2021, at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers James C. Cummings Jr., John T. Cummings, Ronald Cummings and Cecil Cummings; sisters Joyce Cummings, Dolores Wells, Connie Sumner, Vera Mae Cummings and  his wife Janice Ann Cummings.

Those left to cherish his memory are six children, Eugene J. Cummings Jr. (Angela), Angela M. Cummings, Regina A. (Semorris) Anderson, Rhonda Jackson, Darren L. Cummings, and Eugenia R. Cummings; 19 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
