Denise Pamela Cohn was born June 27, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois to Luvert and Maddie Gordon. She was raised by her mother and bonus Dad, Grover Thorton, Sr. After the passing of her mother, her bonus Dad married Ledora Cook. All have preceded her in death except for Ledora.
Denise accepted Jesus Christ at an early age at the First Church of Deliverance in Chicago, Illinois. Her faith was incredibly strong as she battled with cancer up until GOD called her home on October 2, 2020.
Denise graduated from Englewood High School in 1965. She married Lawrence R. Cohn and to this union two beautiful daughters were born (Kathryn Cureton and Pamela Smith). In 2004, she retired from Skychef and moved to Indianapolis.
Denise affectionately known to all as Nanny held several part-time jobs and left a lasting impact on all! To know her was to love her! Nanny loved to work with her hands and could fix anything! She gained the nickname "Nanny The Tool Lady". She also loved baking as she had a sweet tooth for anything sweet (Chocolate Donuts, Chocolate Cake, Moon Pie, Honey Buns)!
Denise leaves to cherish her memory, her loving daughters, Kathryn Cureton (Tony) and Pamela C. Smith; her amazing grandchildren, Walter Smith III, Alexxus Smith and Lauryn Cureton; her stepmother, Ledora Thornton; two sisters, Lostydia Porter and Valorie Worthington; six brothers, Rudolph Williams, Maurice Thorton, Errol Thorton, Grover Thorton, Jr, Lorenzo Thorton and Delmar Thorton; and a host of sister-in-laws, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends to remember her.
