Obituary

Mrs. Bonnie Idell Smith affectionately called “Mrs. Bonnie” was born on April 29, 1944 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of Lawrence and Catherine Whitlow-Hill.   Bonnie was the youngest of two daughters born of this union.

Mrs. Bonnie Idell Smith was united in Holy Matrimony to   Thomas Smith and they enjoyed many happy years together.

Mrs. Bonnie accepted Christ at an early age and attended Our Savior Lutheran Church during her youth.  Later in life she followed her husband and joined Sunrise Missionary Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bonnie Smith received her education in the Indianapolis Public School System attending School #87 and going on to graduate from Crispus Attucks High School.  In addition, Mrs. Bonnie  received her Associates  Degree from Vincennes University, her Bachelor of Science and Masters of  Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University all while raising her family and working full time.

Mrs. Bonnie retired in 2003 after over 36 years of dedicated service to DFAS (Defense Finance and Accounting Service at Fort Benjamin Harrison).  Her mother worked there before her and she enjoyed following in her footsteps.  Mrs. Bonnie worked her way up from the filing room in the basement to   eventually working on cases.  She was extremely thankful to be able to take care of her family and spoke affectionately of the “Building 1”.

Towards the end of her time at DFAS, Mrs. Bonnie began working for H&R Block as a tax preparer.  She did this for over 10 years moving up the ranks becoming a Senior Tax Consultant until she was unable to drive.  She did continue to complete returns for family and friends.  This allowed her to keep up on the latest tax codes, something she could spend hours talking to you about.  Bonnie  also enjoyed watching tennis and golf, especially Tiger Woods and Venus and Serena Williams.  It would be nothing to walk in and you would end up talking to her for awhile about their latest sports accomplishment.

Mrs. Bonnie  unexpectedly departed this life on July 23, 2020, at the age of 76. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Smith, Sr., parents, sister, and grandson.

She leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Albert Highsaw Jr. (Tracy), Robert L. Highsaw (Tina) and Thomas E. Smith Jr. (Toiya); nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.

Humbly Submitted………..The Family
