Irene Smith Fenton was born December 8,1926,  in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the daughter of Jack Smith and Mattie Gasby Smith. As a child, she attended Rockhill School and was always at the top of her class. When she was in third grade, she was promoted three grades ahead.

Irene  married George Fenton on a beautiful Spring day in the” front yard” of her parents’ home on March 3, 1945.  To this  blessed union was born nine children. They professed their love and faith in Jesus Christ, were baptized and joined Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus, Mississippi.

Irene  with her husband, George Fenton and four younger children relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana in May of 1975 to be nearer to their older children.

Irene  retired from the Hyatt Regency in 1987 after ten and one half years of service. There she received several awards, including, “Best    Employee of the Year”.

In 1977,  she joined First Samuel Missionary Baptist Church.  At First Samuel, Irene served on the Mothers’ Board,  the   Senior Missionary and as a Telephone Missionary and Evangelist. Some of her special elder friends during her tenure  included, Sister Grace Bishop, Emmagene Russell Smith, Sister  Evelina Allen,  and Sister Eva Brunson.  She loved cooking soul food, praying and singing all the while she cooked and doing her puzzles.    Irene  was very kind-hearted, always sharing what she had with those in need. She had wisdom and strength with a strong sense of family. She believed that prayer is what holds a family together. She had an  excellent memory and she often reminded us as she aged into her 90th years, “I am in my right mind.” She also enjoyed traveling on  various vacations and family reunions with her  children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Irene  Fenton   departed from this earthy life into eternal rest with God on  Sunday, February 9, 2020.
