Sarah Jane Harris was born June 20, 1912, in Princeton, Kentucky, the daughter of William Washington and Hannah Belle McCormick Washington. She was the youngest of eight siblings. Aunt  Sarah, as her extended family lovingly called her, moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1922.  She grew up in Brightwood area of Indianapolis, and received her education in the Indianapolis Public School System.  She graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1930. She continued her education in nursing at the former Marion County General Hospital, which later became William N. Wishard Memorial Hospital and is now, Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital.

An early trailblazer and trendsetter among women, Mother Harris, embarked upon her career in healthcare as a Ward Secretary at   Veterans Administration Medical Center.  After she completed her course of study, she worked for many years in her field before retiring.  In later years, she owned a used clothing store at the corner of 16th and Emerson and she  was a skilled seamstress.  She had also been employed at the Curtiss-Wright Corporation.

As a youngster, Mother Sarah Harris attended Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Church, where her family worshipped under the late Bishop Garfield Thomas Haywood.  In 1927, Mother Harris received the Holy Ghost and was baptized in Jesus’ Name.  She served through the years until  she transitioned her membership to Christ Church Apostolic under the      pastorate of Bishop James Tyson.  It was under the pastoral leadership of  Bishop B. T. Moore that she returned to Christ Temple.  Mother Harris became a  covenant  member of Faith Tabernacle Apostolic Church under the late Pastor Dorothy McGordon and remained active until her death.  Mother Harris faithfully served the Mother's Board, as a Missionary and in the Musical Departments during her tenure at Faith Tabernacle.

Aunt Sarah departed from her earthly tabernacle on Monday,  January 6, 2020. She was preceded in death by husband, Odie Harris, in 1977; her parents, William and Hannah Belle Washington, and siblings, Vernon, Seymour, James, Isaiah, Ethel,  Connie and Irene Washington.

She leaves in her memories multiple generations of nieces and nephews and her beloved church family.
