Minnie Johnson Brooks was born in West Point, Georgia on July 12, 1927.  She was the daughter of Lizzie and Ed Johnson, who preceded her in death.

She married Ben Brooks on December 26, 1948.  To this union six children were born.

Minnie graduated from Tenth Street High School in West Point, Georgia.  Later, after marriage, she moved to Indianapolis, Indiana.

Minnie enjoyed learning and was quick to take continuing education classes in areas that interested her.  The certificates and credits she obtained included basic computer skills, financial literacy, first aid, and numerous bible study classes.

Minnie worked for the Stouffer Corporation for many years.  She retired as a bus monitor for The Indianapolis Public School System  in 1989.

Minnie was a tireless community worker.  She was a member of United Northwest Area (UNWA), voter registration worker, food pantry volunteer, library volunteer and, in general, an activist for promoting positive change. Once, after Minnie was interviewed on a radio because of what she perceived as unfair treatment of students, she was dubbed by friends as “Militant Minnie”.

Sister Brooks was a member of Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church for over 40 years.  There she was actively involved in numerous organizations including Nurses Aid, Sunday School, VBS, the Kitchen Committee, Baptist Convention, Visitation, and Lazarus.

Among her many talents, Minnie was a superb cook known for her specialties: homemade yeast rolls and peach cobbler.  She loved to have family, neighbors, old and new friends to dinner.  Many adults from the old neighborhood remember as children, how Mrs. Brooks would “feed the whole neighborhood”.

Minnie was determined to succeed at whatever she attempted. That determination served her well. As her health declined, she never lost her faith in God or her strong spirit.  Minnie loved her family and her family loved her dearly.

Minnie Johnson Brooks departed this earthly life June 6, 2019.  She leaves to celebrate her life and memory her children,    Jerome Brooks (Gabriele), Patricia Brooks, Denise McGee (Walter), Michael C. Brooks (Dezzerey), Anthony Brooks; sisters, Peggy McCormick, Claudine Greenwood, and  Alice Morgan; brothers,  Van Johnson (Helen), Arthur Johnson (Ponzettar), and Larry Johnson (Norma); sisters-in-law, Catherine Davidson, Dorothy Ferrell, and Dorothy Swanson (Jerome); grandchildren, Rottcie Paschall (Derrien), Jessica Edwards (Gregory), Veronica DeLeon (Ralph), Davielle Brooks, Diana Grays, Dania Grays, Dayja Grays, and Amanda McGee; six great-grandchildren, a  host of other relatives and friends.

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Psalm 147:3
