Touched by Many, Loved by All

Bert William Means, Sr., the son of Bert Clark Means and Louise G. Reed Means, was the first born of five.  He was born December 22, 1933, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Bert attended I.P.S. #26 and Crispus Attucks High School.  Bert accepted Christ at the age of 12 years at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, while Reverend George Baltimore was Pastor.

In 1976, under the direction of Dr. F. Benjamin Davis, he was ordained as a    Deacon.  Bert  taught Sunday School until he became Trustee at NBMBC in 1986.  He later transitioned to become the Financial Secretary and Administrative Assistant until his health no longer allowed him to continue in that capacity.  His dedicated service spanned over 35 years.

Bert  worked at Cottage Dye House before being drafted into The United States Army in 1954.  Upon returning home in 1956, he resumed his employment with Cottage Dye House.  In 1959, he began working for RCA as a Manufacturing Manager until retiring in 1989.

On March 12, 1960, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Pearl H. Trigg.  They spent many joyous and fulfilling years together.  Within this union, Bert W. Means, Jr. was born.  In 1977, Pearl’s brother Frankie and his wife, Patricia Trigg, were called to Glory and left four children in their care.  Lathen Dee, Katrina, Frankie and Shawnda.  He and his wife really loved children and young people.  They opened their hearts and home to many during his rich and fruitful life.

They traveled to as many places outlined in his library of atlas, spending time with family and friends.  Bert enjoyed talking on the phone with his brother and sisters.  Whenever his team, The Chicago Cubs, were not broadcasting.  You could often spot Bert sporting one of many Cub hats.

On Monday, May 12, 2019, Bert  departed from this earthly life to eternal life.  Loved ones who preceded him in death include his parents, Bert C. and Louise Means; his two brothers, Morris and Donald Means, and his brother-in-law, Carl White.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Pearl H. Means; three sons, Bert W. Means, Jr. (Ronnella), Lathen Dee Trigg and Frankie (Katisha); two daughters, Katrina D. Hill (David) and Shawnda M. Perkins (Kevin); two sisters, Mary L. Means-Lyons  and Helen B. Means-White; sisters-in-law, Elnora Wilson, Judith Means, Jessie Trigg, and Sheila Trigg; brother-in-law, Dr. Fitzhugh L.
