Mr. Vernon James Bettis, son of the late Margaret and Eugene Bettis was born May 27, 1932, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was the  second child of three siblings.  Vernon James was known to family and friends as "Jim".

He attended Indianapolis Public school #4 and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School.

Jim was a fun-loving young man and always made time for his family and friends.  Throughout his life he maintained contact with many of his childhood friends.  He was an avid fisherman and bowler.  He loved working on cars and could diagnose the problem without ever touching the car.

Jim's first venture into employment occurred at the age of nine (9) as a paperboy for the Indianapolis Recorder. After graduating from high school, Jim secured employment as a Beef  Grader with the Kingham Company from 1951 to 1952.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 13, 1952.  His military career included a tour in Germany.  Jim was honorably discharged in September 1954. Upon returning to Indianapolis,  Jim secured employment at High Grade and later retired from Allison's after twenty-six years of service.

Jim met his late wife Marion in 1954.  On July 27, 1957,  Jim and Marion (Pannell) were united in marriage.  This union was blessed with six children and spanned 46 years until Marion's death.

Following the passing of his beloved wife, Jim gave his life to Christ and was baptized at Eastern Star Church.

After several years of declining health, Vernon James Bettis transitioned to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 18, 2021 at 3:00 am at the age of 89 years, one month, and 21 days.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Eugene; wife, Marion; son, Eric and great-grand daughter,  A'Shawni Bibbs.

He leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Judy Bettis Hornberger, Vanessa Bettis, Ilean Bettis, and Karen Bettis; sons, Vernon J. Bettis, Jr., and Herman Bettis (Kimberly); grandchildren, Curtis Ward, Sr., Shawn Bibbs, Eric Bettis, Jr. Vernon J. Bettis, III, Miley Bettis, Banx Bettis, April Davis, Brandy Nichols, Erica Gaddis, and Kevin Hendricks; great-grandchildren, Curtis Ward Jr., Jayla Ward, Jayden Ward, Bailey Ward, Adriana Young, Riley Suber, and Reese Suber; daughter-in-law, Theresa Bettis; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

On behalf of the WV Bandy's we want to express our condolence in the lost of our special friend and family, Jim. We always enjoyed his visits to WV during the 4th of July with (Uncle) Cephas Bandy and how he just made himself at home. We pray that God will comfort each of you and that you find joy in remembering Jim's humor and the special family gatherings every Sunday.
