Life Reflection
Melissa Ann Black was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 5, 1969, to Diane and James Stevenson. She was preceded in death by her son, Shawn Edward Hicks, Jr. and grandparents Alma D and J.C. Black Sr. Melissa departed to join her loved ones on March 20, 2024, but her place in our hearts will remain forever.
Melissa attended Indianapolis Public Schools, graduating from Emmerich Manual High School. She loved working with children and fulfilled her passion by working within different school systems and childcare centers. Winding Ridge Elementary held a special place in her heart. You could also find her at Speedway gas stations brightening someone’s day.
Melissa dedicated her life to Christ at an early age and knew God well. Her faith remained strong in Christ throughout her life’s journey.
Melissa had a heart of gold. She never met a stranger and hardly said no. She was the life of the party, able to find humor even in the toughest times. There were few times you weren’t able to see her beautiful hazel or green eyes accompanied by a smile and a joke. She could be found drinking a lemonade or Pepsi and living her life on the go most days. She enjoyed taking drives and sharing her love with everyone she came across. Melissa loved her grandbabies fiercely and was often surrounded by them. Her legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of everyone she encountered.
Rejoicing in her homegoing and memory are her parents, James and Diane Stevenson; daughters, Jaleesa Weatherly and Jessica King; siblings, Shawn (Richard) Stewart, James Stevenson, Jr., and Angela (Dale) Gray; grandchildren, Jayda, Janiyah, Aayden, Jeremiah, Khy’Lie, Shaleah, Seyi, Kynnedi, Lauren, Summer, Arnell, III and Shawn, III; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.
