On March 22, 1948, a beacon of hope and love was born to Frederick Willis Boyd Sr. and Jeanetta Mae Boyd. James H. Boyd Sr., known fondly as Daddy, Papa, Coach, JB, Pops, Goose, and Papa Boyd, embarked on a journey of selfless service from a young age, touching the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to cross his path. James confessed his faith early in life, a testament to his deep-rooted values and the servant's heart that would become his signature trait.
After graduating from Arsenal Technical High School in 1967, James pursued higher education at ITT Technical Institute, earning an associate degree in Electronic Engineering Technology in 1969. His career was marked by dedication and excellence, serving as a coach and supervisor at the Tabernacle Recreation Center from 1969-1985, and as a beloved little league baseball manager and coach at Ozark Ike from 1970-1979. His commitment was recognized with an award for Outstanding Volunteer Service, a mere glimpse into the profound impact James would have on his community.
In his professional life, James excelled as an application engineer at Mallory from 1969 to 1986, earning multiple leadership awards. However, his true passion lay in mentoring and coaching the youth of his community. He led an afterschool program at Christamore House for six years, shaping the lives of teens in Haughville with his wisdom and compassion.
James' unwavering dedication to service continued with the Houston Area Urban League where he mentored youth from 1991 to 2013, further amplifying his influence through participation in the National Urban League Youth Conferences from 2000 to 2020. His extensive service was recognized with numerous lifetime achievement awards, the Martin Luther King Living Legacy Award, and distinctions as an Indiana Youth Institute Leadership Associate and Indiana Youth Investment Award recipient.
Beyond his professional achievements, James served the homeless at DaySpring Center, held the esteemed positions of a three-term President and Board Chairman at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church, a ministry in which he loved, and he led the Rebecca's Garden of Hope Tutoring and Mentoring Program as Co-Director for seven years. Over 55 years of mentorship and 30 years of Coaching, James shaped the futures of countless individuals, leaving a legacy of love, leadership, and hope.
James was a devoted father to Rachelle Boyd-Huff (Ronald) and James Boyd Jr, and a cherished grandfather , great-grandfather, brother, brother in law, uncle, cousin. He is survived by his brother, Frederick W. Boyd Jr. (Elaine); Children, Rachelle (Ronald), James Boyd Jr, grandchildren De'Ron, Syre, Prince, Sir, Keylah, great-grandson Tyler, nephew Frederick III, niece Vanessa, godchildren Delmon (Debbie), Latonya B, Keanna W, Sean P, Juan H, Hope W, Markeya M; and a host of cousins, friends, mentees, and other relatives who will forever treasure his memory.
Preceded in death by his beloved parents, James' legacy is a testament to the profound impact one individual can have on their community and the world. He not only raised his own children but also played a pivotal role in the lives of many within his community. James H. Boyd Sr. was a towering figure of compassion, leadership, and unwavering support, whose legacy of love and service will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest in peace, Daddy. Your life was a masterclass in humanity, and your legacy will forever be cherished.
