Her Life Story
Mrs. Dorothy Mae Hinkle, affectionately called “Mama”, was born on July 29, 1928, in Louisville, Kentucky, and one of six children of Adam and Clara Bella Woodford. She departed her life on March 8, 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Dorothy was educated in the Louisville Public Schools System. Through God’s blessings, she had a thirty-year courtship and marriage to the love of her life, Charles Hinkle; and had eleven children. The family relocated from Kentucky to Indiana in 1962. Dorothy was an extraordinary homemaker and entrepreneur. She was a self-made barber for young men, which included her husband, eight sons and neighbors. In addition, she found time to teach her children the art of cleanliness, cooking, and caring for a home.
In 1983, Dorothy Hinkle joined Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, which upon its merger became Greater St. James Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member who regularly attended weekly Sunday School, Morning Worship, and was a choir member for many years, which gave her the opportunity to travel to other church events in neighboring states. Mother Hinkle became the oldest member of her community and church and when her health changed and she was not able to participate in weekly service, St. James Church members brought the church to her with communion and gifts of love. Thus, she remained a faithful and loyal church member.
Mrs. Hinkle enjoyed travelling to family functions and reunions that included Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Canada. She had a great sense of humor and looked forward to weekly visits from her children and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hinkle, Sr. (1991). Three children: Troy Hinkle, Sr. (2015), Raymond Hinkle, Sr. (2021), Charles Hinkle, Jr. and wife Brenda Hinkle (2022), and her five siblings, Lee, Warren, Robert, John, and Regina Woodford-Taylor, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
She leaves to cherish her memories, seven children and their family, William Woodford (Viola), Russell Hinkle, Sr., Janice (Mark) Wilson, Michael Hinkle (Daniele), Robert Hinkle, Sr., Dyanne (Dale) Allen, Donald Hinkle (Joann), and Katrina Stewart; daughter-in-law, Willeta Hinkle; a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, close relatives in Kentucky (Susie Simpson, Juanita Bridwell, Pearl Norfleet, Roberta Bishop, Virginia Woodford, Gloria Greer, Frances Rankin, Deborah Warfield, Lawrence Woodford), and her church family at Greater St. James Missionary Baptist Church.
