Life Reflection
David Lee Odle, Sr., a cherished member of the community, passed away on April 4, 2024. Born in Evanston, Illinois, on July 12, 1948, to the late Samuel Lee Odle and Helen (Robbins) Odle-Clay. David's life was marked by his out-pour community service, his jovial way of communicating, his passion, and his dedication to others.
David’s spiritual journey began at St. John A.M.E. Church, where actively participated in numerous church events and community activities. From his early years of singing in the St. John A.M.E. Torchbearers’ Youth Choir and to his contributions as an adult choir member, David's commitment to his faith and community was unwavering.
Educated in the Indianapolis public schools, David attended Shortridge High School before graduating from North Central High School in the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township in 1967. His passion and love for music led him to become a lead singer in various local music groups, during and after high school.
Following his graduation, David enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, bravely serving his country in Vietnam. He was honored with the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm for his courageous service. Having sustaining injuries during his tour of duty, David was honorably discharged in 1970.
Returning to Indianapolis, David became deeply involved in community events and pursued entrepreneurial ventures, including a successful career with Mays Chemical Company. Despite facing challenges due to his disability, David‘s entrepreneurial spirit led him to successfully jump start the Great Transportation Enterprise (GTE) with Indy-Go, and to establish several additional local businesses.
David was very passionate about giving back to his hometown community, and he dedicated countless hours towards supporting several not-for-profit causes. He was one of the first notable organizers of the Circle City Classic Parade.
David is survived by his loving wife, Melaine “Cookie” Odle; his children David Odle, Jr., Douglas Odle, Amani Odle, DeJanette Davis, Nicole Owen, Byron Odle, Nicole Wheeler, and Tamika Wheeler; twenty-seven grand-children; twenty great-grandchildren; as well as his siblings, Samuel (Alexis) Odle, Nita Clay, Alice Clay, and Charlotte (Will, Sr.) Dunlap, a host of three generations of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends, who will miss his smile and raspy voice at family events.
