Betty Ruth Beaven Hughes, the daughter of James Henry Beaven and Bertha Mary Anderson Beaven, was born July 4, 1940, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She became the 10th child and youngest girl of this loving family.
Betty was introduced to St. Rita Catholic Church as a young child, and it was here that she was baptized in accordance with the Holy Rites of the Roman Catholic Church. She along with her family held a long, rich history and dedicated their lives to their church community. Her father, Henry Beaven, became the First Grand Knight of the Knights of Peter Claver. In addition, Betty’s older brothers owned Beaven Construction and assisted in the construction and building of the church and St. Rita Catholic School, where she received her primary education. Betty would complete her secondary education at Arsenal Technical High School, graduating in June 1958.
Betty developed her passion for cooking at an early age through her time spent preparing and serving meals inside of her father’s restaurant, Beaven’s Wholesome Cafeteria. It was here that she also met the love of her life, Ernest Hughes. In August of 1959, the two were united in Holy Matrimony. To this union was born three children, daughter, Vicki, and sons, Kevin and Michael.
Betty was employed at the U. S. Army Finance and Accounting Center located at Fort Benjamin Harrison. After several years of employment, she decided to devote herself to caring for her husband, children, and home. Once her youngest left for college, Betty merged her lifelong love of servitude with shopping and dedicated twenty years working part-time for L. S. Ayres and Company (currently Macy’s) all while continuing to care for her family, friends, and church.
As a member of St. Rita Catholic Church, Betty was a very active and faithful servant. Since joining the 3rd Degree of the Knights of Peter Claver, Ladies Auxiliary Christ the King Court #97 in April of 1989, she held several positions. Betty served as the organization’s Treasurer for twenty-four years, she was the Co-Chair of the Compassionate Care Committee, and also a devoted member of the Funeral Repast Bereavement Committee. Initiated in October of 1995, she was also a loyal member of 4th Degree Searcy L. Greenwell, Ladies of Grace Chapter 14th for twenty-seven years. Betty attended many conferences and conventions throughout her tenure with the Ladies’ Courts. In addition, her beloved Claver family selected her as Mother of the Year in 2012. Betty was a reliable parishioner who often provided transportation for others in need of a ride to or from church or anywhere else that may have needed to go. She was also part of the Morning Crew, a group of individuals who count the church’s weekly monetary offerings and she also volunteered for the St. Vincent DePaul helpline.
Betty enjoyed a long and blessed life. She was always stylish and enjoyed shopping and taking care of herself through regular hair and nail appointments. More importantly, she adored the quality time spent with her husband, children, grandchildren, and church family. She was the heart and soul of all of the family gatherings and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
