Mr. Edward (Sam) J. Madden, Sr., the son of Rev. William Madden and Nellie Hall Madden was born May 19, 1930 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Edward received his primary education from Indianapolis public schools #26, and later attended Arsenal Technical High and Crispus Attucks High School.
At an early age in life he was baptized at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church; where his parents the late Rev. WM M. and Nellie Madden were the original founding members. He was a member of St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church.
Over the years, he had worked at the former Claypool Hotel; Shell Oil Company; in public relations at AFNB Bank for over twenty years; for the Frank E. McKinney, Jr. family; at the governor’s residence during the Robert Orr administration and at the Indiana Department of Transportation, from which he retired. During the month of May for over twenty years he worked for the A.J. Foyt, Jr. Racing Team.
Edward was an avid bowler, winning many trophies. He also enjoyed fishing and reminded “Ree” of Thursday evenings for Bingo. If you knew Sam, cowboys on TV were his favorite.
As a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash, his memberships include Men of Our Town and the Butler University Men’s Club, where he assisted with the golf outings.
Mr. Edward J. Madden, Sr. entered into eternal rest on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at the age of eighty-three years old.
His survivors include his wife of sixty-three years, Shirley M. (Taylor) Madden; their children Edward J. Madden, Jr. Brenda Lee Gray (Michael), Nellie M. and Virgil R. Madden; grandchildren, Edward J. Madden, III, Jomnese (Crystal) and Tania Young; eight great grandchildren and sister, Cleo Barnett a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
